In addition to living in a digital world, we live in an increasingly visual world. As a matter of fact, over a few decades, visual elements have been greatly emphasized and valued. Indeed, nowadays, people are daily exposed to thousands of medias such as advertisings, pictures, displays, and so forth… Thus, this is easier for them to pick up on the delivered message when it is nicely designed. When faced with visuals such as icons, colors, graphs or logos, people can better understand the interest of the campaign they are seeing. Visuals can be eye-catching and captivating which may result in a willingness for people to learn more about what’s being advertised. Although visuals are highly appreciated, text is sill used but might be boring at some point. Keep in mind that the goal is to attract, engage and capture consumers so adapting to their preferences is paramount. This is critical for you to think like the customer and ask yourself what you would like to see if you were exposed to that same ad. As of now, you may wonder: which type of designs to use and how to implement them? Today, I am pleased to walk you through some of the mostly use designs that will help you achieve your objectives/goals no matter what is your purpose either promoting a product, emphasizing a new brand or creating a campaign. Let’s get started.

Using designs: the best way to stand out and face competition

Prior to talking about designs, I would like to emphasize the idea that using visual designs will allow you to work on your creativity while expressing your ideas/feelings/opinions. Additionally, implementing designs will enable you to be unique and stand out in such an oversaturated digital marketing world. Indeed, there are hundreds and hundreds of different designs and the way you decide to implement them will be the fruit of your own inspiration, originality and creativity. Yet, while implementing designs, try not to be too specific. Whatever you are using must resonate within people’s minds. When they watch your content, those designs should be aligned in a way that is somewhat familiar to them. They don’t want to get confused and want to go straight to the point.

Designs principles

Digital color

According to me, the most powerful, insightful and impactful visual designs is colors that instantly brings a special customization no matter what you are implementing, writing or promoting. Some well chosen colors can certainly make the difference. Some colors attract more than others and must be selected according to what you are trying to promote. For instance, as the summer is approaching, people are planning to purchase a new swimsuit. If the swimsuit is presented in colors such as yellow, green or orange, this might be more attention-grabbing than if it was introduced in black or brown because the summer implies wearing bright colors. In addition, a color can make a difference in the call to action button. If the color of the call to action fits the product being emphasized or if it is simply visually attractive, the likelihood of people clicking may increase. I advise you to try 2 different campaigns and change the color of the call to action to find out what works best.

Balance is critical. According to me, this is the most important key component to take into consideration. Balance results in a perfect match between objects, color, texture and space. No matter what you are promoting either a cloth, a skincare product or a brand new car, you want to make sure not to incorporate too many colors, text or space. Keep in mind that your overall goal is to raise awareness and attract interest. For example, if people see too many colors and not enough text, they may lose track of what the advertising is about. You need to ensure to have a mix of everything to increase the likelihood of them watching the ad until the end.

White space

White space is of significance. No matter if you have consistency or not, white space should always be emphasized. In fact, people don’t like to be overload with too much information. This is critical to insert white spaces so that people can devote some time to evaluate each element in depth. For instance, when you write an article, you leave some spaces in between paragraphs to facilitate your audience’s reading. With an ad, this is the same thing, you want to make their understanding as easy and convenient as possible.

Although using white space is helpful, using proximity is as essential. As a matter of fact, proximity increases relationships. After all, people want to be able to gather each element in order to increase interest which may lead to a desire that may result in a purchase decision. For instance, when it comes to my sunglasses: optical brand Clemence&Margaux, even though I just white space in between elements, they are all aligned in a manner that links them to each other. If people visit my website, they are going to see the product, then a brief description of the product followed by the colors in which this product is available. Each element that constitutes a product should be thoroughly linked to each other.

If I were to give you an advice, it would be to never underestimate the power of contrast. Indeed, contrast is noticeable right away. This is eye-catching and attention grabbing which is great to attract consumers and get them to learn more about what you have to offer or present. Contrast can be colored based such as white and black, sized based such as large and small, shaped based such as rectangular or round and so forth. The int here is to make people realize that something has changed, this will increase their curiosity. For instance, let’s assume that you own a brand of bags, you are looking to promote one of the bags of the summer collection, you may want to show it in black and then in white in order to create an unexpected contrast because this is what draws people’s attention.

Visual hierarchy

Visual hierarchy can be referred to as the order of importance and can be reached through different colors, sizes, shapes, alignment, text and so forth. Using alignment is critical because obviously, you don’t want to lose track of what your end goal is and you want to make sure to achieve the desired outcome which is for people to fully understand the content and the message being introduced to them. Another great tool is to use scale because each point of the scale matches the level of importance of the information being presented.

I went over the most important designs principles. As you can see, they all have their own importance and all matter somehow to the success of whatever you are trying to promote. Keep in mind that implementing designs should be in accordance with your tastes and values but that people’s expectations are as important and try to constantly wonder what you would like to see if you were them. Last but not least, those principles don’t merely apply to campaigns, ads or articles. They can also be implemented on any type of websites or social media. Remember that a well-designed page will always attract people and make them want to learn more. No matter what you are doing, the hierarchy of importance should remain your priority.
